Hinterland
Behind the coast, a green sea of tradition, culture and tastes.
The inland of the Romagna region will surprise you with its charm, beauty, and variety of panoramas, views, history and tradition.
It is sufficient to leave the multicoloured coastal beaches by a few kilometres in order to find the true roots of this land and along with it the legendary history of the Malatesta family.
Travellers will have the pleasure of enjoying villages, fortresses, landscapes facing the Adriatic Sea like natural balconies as well beautiful places where to enjoy nature, art and hearty cuisine.
The landscape is split into two hilly areas with different morphological characteristics: the hills of Valmarecchia, where the landscape is peppered by spurs and rather inaccessible and wild places and the Valconca with smoother and rounder hills.
The traveller will then be able to mark and follow two itineraries discovering Rimini’s inland. The first, a place crossed by the Marecchia River, at the discovery of enchanting small towns and villages such Santarcangelo di Romagna, Verucchio, Torriana and Poggio Berni. These villages represented, thanks to their military fortresses, a fundamental defensive barrier in order to guarantee the power of the Malatesta’s over the entire territory in the Medieval and Renaissance Age.
In the small town of Santarcangelo di Romagna, of Roman origins, it is still possible to notice the typical fortified medieval town structure along with its undisputed charm. In the “old” village it is also possible to find a network of mysterious tuff caves: more than one hundred tunnels that form an actual underground city. Many caves are open to the public.
Another location of great interest is Verucchio, which inhabited centre can be found above a spur where the majestic Malatesta Fortress stands (also called “Rocca del Sasso” – “Fortress of the Rock”) that oversees the Marecchia Valley. The origins of Verucchio are very ancient: in fact, it is said that a highly developed people lived here, probably of Etruscan origins, which left precious artistic and cultural evidences. This civilization was called Villanoviana and it lived between the XI and VII century BC. Several archaeological excavations brought to light wonderful and unique finds that it is possible to enjoy when visiting the Archaeological Civic Museum.
The village of Poggio Berni is located right after Santarcangelo, in a hilly area, cultural crossroads of ancient historical buildings and noble palaces, such as the Marcosanti and Astolfi Palaces and many mills that confirm the abundance of these fertile lands.
The small villages of Torriana and Montebello are located on two spurs that dominate the Valmarecchia. Montebello, which has remained essentially intact over time, is an intriguing and charming place, currently under protection as a faunal oasis. Its famous Castle can surprise every visitor thanks to the abundance of its rich treasures and secrets, treasure chests, and valuable furniture, such as a painted Cassapanca (chest-bench) that dates back to the period of the Crusades. Inside it is possible to find a maze of mysterious tunnels, deep wells and secret passages: the ancient chronicles tell of the story of a five year old girl with peculiar blue hair who disappeared in 1375 in the castle’s underground tunnels. This story gave origin to the legend of the ghost of Azzurrina, which apparently still walks within the walls of the castle. Also Torriana, located a slightly lower altitude respect to Montebello, can pride itself for its Fortress, which was renovated more than once.
Just like Valmarecchia, also Valconca is filled with great beauty all to be discovered. These lands are characterized by the continuous alternating of smooth rounded hills on top of which it is possible find peaceful villages.
There are many locations to remember: Coriano, San Clemente, the flourishing San Giovanni in Marignano, located a few km away from the beaches of Cattolica, a small and fertile agricultural city known also for the magical witches’ night (an event that takes place between June 23rd and 24th), where it is possible to live once again the ancient traditions and mysteries of the witches. And also Morciano di Romagna, famous for the ancient Saint Gregory Fair, Montefiore Conca, which is certainly one of the medieval places that has remained most intact over time and the most charming in our region, with its woods and green countryside. From its majestic Fortress, which unique shapes are visible from miles, you can see the entire Romagna coast, the mountains of the Marche region and San Marino. In Montefiore, the glamour of the palaces, monasteries and churches that were built during the peak of splendour of the Malatesta rule are there to surprise and enchant with their lively, beautiful and quiet atmosphere that has survived to this day.
Another location of interest is Gemmano with its untouched nature, where the marks of man are rare and the countryside is savage and flourishing: a true paradise for those who love nature and a vacation in the countryside. In fact, here it is also possible to find the Natural Reserve of the Onferno Caves.
Then it is possible to reach Saludecio, a village that between the sixteenth and nineteenth century was undoubtedly the most important little city in Valconca, famous also thanks to the religious figure of Blessed Amato Ronconi, who lived here in 1200. It offers many beautiful trekking and mountain bike paths all to be tried out.
Continuing on you will find Mondaino. The name means "Mountain of Fallow Deer" since many herds of fallow deer roamed this area at one time and there was a temple dedicated to the goddess Diana, goddess of the hunt and protector of the forests. Mondaino, located at the border between Malatesta and Montefeltro is surrounded by powerful walls and doors. Its unique Circus hosts the “Palio del Daino” (Palio of the Fallow Deer) every August along with its enchanting historical reevocations.
Another location to be included in the itinerary is Montegridolfo, located as a sentinel on the ridge between Conca Valley and Foglia Valley, near the Marche region. The village was fully restored and integrated, which turned it into a popular vacation and tourism destination. The city’s structure is medieval and it is characterized by a network of lanes. Next to the entrance gate there is the beautiful Palazzo Viviani, which today is both a hotel and restaurant.
In the “middle” of Conca Valley you can find Montescudo, along the border with San Marino; here the landscape is mostly constituted by farms and the lifestyle is still significantly influenced by farming traditions, which survived till today and the local cuisine, as in the majority of the Romagna region, offer tasty surprises. In August, in Montescudo, there is the famous “Sagra della Patata” (Potato’s Fair).
Finally, nearby, it is possible to find the interesting village of Montecolombo, which also shows a well identifiable medieval structure. Make sure not to lose the Sagra della Trippa e dello Strozzaprete (Festival of the Tripe and Priest Chokers) in July.
